Esther McVey has renewed her call for it to be scrapped after new research suggests direct services from London to Wilmslow will be affected.

The Tatton MP said this change could cost her constituents more money and add travelling time onto their journey.

Speaking in Parliament, Ms McVey who opposes HS2, said: “It has been reported over the last couple of days that accommodating HS2 will mean fewer trains between the north and London. One station affected is Wilmslow in my constituency. Does the Minister agree, that if that were that to happen, HS2 would no longer be value for money or good for the north? It would certainly take longer and cost my constituents more.”

The research by the new Midland and Northern Transport Group that said many intercity services will need to be axed due to line-capacity issues, with Wilmslow affected.

The group, made up of MPs representing red wall and rural constituencies, said stopping services will be significantly reduced once Phase 2a - West Midlands to Crewe opens and will get worse once Phase 2b which links Crewe to Manchester opens.

Ms McVey said: “I have been very clear in my opposition to HS2. It is a complete waste of money and I would like nothing more than for it to be scrapped and consigned to the history books where it belongs.

“What is needed is better transport links across the north. I am concerned by the findings of this research and will be asking further questions on this.”

Chief Secretary to the Treasury John Glen said: “HS2 is going to happen. The question is what additional investments across other parts of the rail infrastructure might benefit my right hon. Friend’s constituents additionally (and more directly).

“I set out with the integrated rail plan the £96 billion package to improve rail connections, and many elements of that will have a direct impact on her constituents in Cheshire.”
